I'm looking to upgrade my Trane heat pump's programmable thermostat to a smart thermostat. My current setup has three wires (red, white, and blue), and I'm curious if I'm stuck using only a Trane smart thermostat since I want to avoid rewiring the system. If you want the easiest route, sticking with a Trane smart thermostat is probably your best bet since it's designed to work with your system. They can be a bit pricey, running anywhere from $300 to $500, but you might find a good deal on a used one online. Just keep in mind these thermostats usually aren't compatible with standard smart thermostats, so if you want something different, you might need to rewire a bit if you’ve got extra wires just hanging around.
That makes sense! I checked out those newer Trane models, and yeah, around $400 seems to be the norm. I’m thinking it might be better to go ahead and rewire since we’ll likely be replacing the unit in a few years anyway. Might as well do it all at once.
