Can I Use 48 Volt Solar Panels with a 12 Volt System?

I found some 280 watt solar panels at a great price, but they're rated for 48 volts. I think they might have come from a whole house solar system. Can I use one or two of these panels in a simple 12 volt setup, and if so, what do I need to make it work?

You definitely can use those 48V panels with a 12V system, but you’ll need a solar charge controller that’s designed to handle the higher voltage. Look for one that specifies it can work with the open circuit voltage (Voc) of your panels, which is usually indicated on the panel’s label. Just make sure your charge controller can handle the panel’s input voltage without going overboard. Something in the range of around $50 should do the trick!

Thanks for clarifying that! I'll definitely look into the right controller.

Those solar panels should be just fine for your setup as long as you get the right charge controller. Make sure to take a look at the specs on the back of the panel for the max open circuit voltage (Voc). You want a 12V mppt controller that can handle that voltage. Just a heads up, keep an eye on the input rating of the controller to avoid any over-voltage issues!

Have them send you a picture of the label on the back to be sure. That way you’ll get all the correct info!
