Can I Use 80% Ethanol Hand Sanitizer for Shellac?

I'm curious if hand sanitizer with 80% ethanol would work for shellac. This sanitizer also has small amounts of glycerol and hydrogen peroxide. With so many bottles available at a low price after the pandemic, I'm wondering if this could be a viable substitute for denatured alcohol, which can be tough to find. Any thoughts on this?

It's worth doing a little test to see how it works with the shellac. I'm skeptical that it will work perfectly, though. I'd recommend starting with a small batch to be safe.

Why not run a test and let us know what you find out? It could help others too!

Definitely! I'm looking forward to making it a little science experiment with my son.

I think the glycerin in it might pull water into your finish and make it cloudy. If you had the right permits, you could re-distill it first—just some food for thought!

That sounds complicated! I'm just trying to keep it simple, but thanks for the idea.
