Can I Use a 100W Solar Panel in Storage to Keep My RV Batteries Charged?

I have a 200W solar panel installed on my RV, but it's currently in covered storage. I was wondering if I could connect a 100W folding solar panel on an extension cord to a spot where it would catch some sun to keep my batteries topped off?

Yes, you totally can! Just wire the 100W panel in parallel with your existing panel, and it should add to the output. Just make sure both panels have roughly the same voltage to keep things safe.

While wiring in another panel might seem like a good idea, you might want to consider a battery cutoff switch instead. I've done that with my camper, and it keeps the battery in great shape without any drains. Also, you probably don’t need a 100W panel. A 20W panel could do the trick if you use a trickle charge controller.

I was thinking the 100W would be better for when we're actually camping, too! More power is always good, right? Plus, since it's not in full sun, I thought the 100W would help get more power where a 20W might not cut it.

Have you considered just disconnecting the batteries instead? That way, you can avoid any drain while it's in storage.
