Can I Use a 32″ Prehung Door for a 30″ Doorway?

I have a detached garage with a doorway that measures 30 inches wide, but someone gave me a prehung door that's 32 inches. Is there any way to make this work, or should I look for a different door?

Just to throw it out there, cutting down a heavy door is super labor-intensive. It's usually filled with insulation and built with a pretty strong frame. Keep that in mind! Sometimes picking up a cheap clearance door is the way to go instead.

That makes sense! I think I’ll check out some local stores to see what they have.

Honestly, it’s probably best to just get the right door for your opening. Trying to make a 32" door fit a 30" frame isn’t going to work well. Reframing the wall is an option, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have experience. It’ll save you a lot of hassle in the long run to stick with what fits!

Absolutely, it’s just going to create more headaches down the road. Better to invest in the right size.

Before you decide, double-check if the 30" and 32" measurements are nominal or actual sizes. That could give you some wiggle room. If the opening allows, maybe you can trim a bit. If it’s solid wood, you could cut strips off each side, but that’s a lot of work for a fiberglass or metal door. Just a thought, but it might be worth visiting places like Menards where they have clearance doors.
