I'm trying to find ways to minimize dust inhalation in my small woodshop in addition to my current dust collection system. I have an extra household air purifier (the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH), and I'm curious if it would be effective in a woodshop. I know there are more robust air purifiers designed specifically for shops, but I'm not clear on how different they really are. Would my household air purifier actually help with dust control, or is there a potential risk of overloading it and causing damage? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

If you’re looking for an affordable option, consider the WEN 3410 air cleaner. It's about $130 and works great in my workshop. I’ve been quite satisfied with it!
I actually built my own solution for my shop. I used a CAT fan and four MERV 13 filters! It works great for keeping the air clean.
Air purifiers work by pushing air through filters, but you need high airflow for a woodshop. A box fan with a MERV 13 filter would be a great setup—these commercial filters do the same job but with heavy-duty fans designed to handle more volume and are usually mounted out of the way.
Your household air purifier won’t cut it in a woodshop setting. For effective dust removal, you need a system that has a lot more airflow and larger filters. Woodshop filters can filter larger particles first which helps prolong the life of HEPA filters. Trust me, sawdust will clog a household unit super fast!
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend using your household purifier in a woodshop. It's better to go with a box fan and a filter instead. I tried it before, and it just didn’t work out for me.
Shop-specific air cleaners usually have a much higher airflow and more durable filters that can be cleaned and don't clog as easily. While household HEPA filters can catch finer particles, they might clog up quickly with all the sawdust. For example, my WEN air filter has about 400 cfm and I’ve noticed it needs less maintenance than my household filter, which only has 50 cfm and gets clogged after a short time. Honestly though, always wear a proper mask to protect your lungs while working in the shop!
In my shop, I use two dust filters from Magnum, which are pretty standard and effective. They use cheap prefilters that you can replace easily, so maintenance is hassle-free and they do a great job filtering the air!

I also have that same WEN unit and it’s been reliable for me too! I did have an issue with the control board breaking early on, but their customer service was excellent and I haven’t had any issues in the last couple years.
