Can I Use a Light Dimmer to Control PC Fan Speed?

Hey everyone! I'm a bit confused about whether I can use a light dimmer switch to control the speed of PC case fans. I'm looking to use these fans to help with airflow through a ceiling vent. I thought it might be a cost-effective solution, but I'm not sure if it's safe or effective. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I have to question the effectiveness of using small PC fans for your vent idea. If you really want to move air, you might not see much of a difference using just these fans, especially if you’ve got high-performance fans in play already. Maybe consider a more powerful fan setup?

Unfortunately, you can’t directly use a light dimmer for PC fans, because PC fans operate on low voltage DC power (usually 12V), while household dimmers work with high voltage AC power (around 120V). So, you would end up with some serious issues if you tried. Stick to dedicated fan controllers if you want to adjust their speeds safely!

Just a note, if you find an old rheostat designed for DC, that might work. But make sure it’s compatible—better safe than sorry!
