I have allergy issues and live in an old apartment where the baseboard heating runs constantly. When the outside temperature is pleasant, I want to let in fresh air, but I'm concerned about allergens. I was wondering if I can install an air filter in my open window to help minimize allergens or if I should just set my window A/C unit to fan mode instead. I typically have to run the A/C when it gets cold outside, but it can get too hot inside when the weather is nice. Any advice would be appreciated!

Give it a shot! Just remember that your A/C probably doesn't have a good allergen filter in the fresh air setting. An air filter by itself might not let much air through unless there's a strong breeze. A 24x24 inch furnace filter works well with a box fan, and if you can find a filter that fits your window, sealing it around the edges can create a negative pressure system, which helps draw in fresh air through the filter! It’s a neat trick used by woodworkers for air quality, too.

Thanks! I think I will go with the fan idea since there's no cross breeze in my apartment.
