Can I Use an Electric Hand Planer for Making End Grain Cutting Boards?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to start making end grain cutting boards as gifts for my family. However, I'm currently on a budget and can't afford a benchtop planer. Do you think I could achieve good results using an electric hand planer instead? Any insights or tips would be appreciated!

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend using an electric hand planer for end grain boards. They tend to warp the pieces and don’t provide the precision you need. A router with a flattening sled is a much better choice. It’s cost-effective and gives you better results without breaking the bank! You can even make your sled pretty cheaply if you already have a router.

Totally agree! The router sled can be a game changer. Plus, it’s versatile; you can use the router for a ton of other projects too.

Using a hand planer won't really give you even results since end grain requires a lot of precision. Ideally, you'd want a thickness planer or at least a table saw to get those pieces uniform. But if you're looking to save money, definitely go with a router setup!
