Can I Use Cardboard and Wood Chips to Control Weeds in My Garden?

I'm starting a garden in a really overgrown field and tarped one section over winter. The tarp blew off part of it, but what was under it is pretty much dead now. The other half wasn't tarped at all. I'm wondering if I can just lay down some cardboard on the open soil and cover it with wood chips. Will this stop the weeds from growing through, or will they push right up? Also, is it okay to do this in the section that was previously under the tarp, or does it need more time before covering? I wish I could show a pic, but it's all covered in snow right now! I'm getting worried about planting seeds since my growing season is short and I might not have the time to tarp again before spring. Any ideas?

Yeah, the perennial weeds might still grow through unless you pile on a good amount—like 9 inches—of wood chips. Those invasive plants from overgrown fields are tough, particularly the woody ones and vines. Be prepared for a bit of a battle!

Considering your time crunch and garden size, I'd suggest renting a sod remover first. It’ll help clear out the area effectively. Just stack the removed sod grass side to grass side; it'll break down over time into usable compost. But be wary, it does add some time to your process before planting.

Yeah, renting sounds good, but it's super pricey around here. I might just have to tarp it and lose a few weeks this spring. Wish I had better options!
