Can I Use Garden Compost for My Houseplants?

Hey everyone! I have a few houseplants that are in need of fresh soil, and I'm curious if using garden compost would be a good idea. Are there any drawbacks to using it for indoor plants? Thanks in advance for your advice!

It's probably safer to go for a bag of indoor plant compost instead. I had a spooky experience with fungus gnats a few years back, and I definitely don't want to deal with that again!

Yeah, if fungus gnats are a concern, avoid those multipurpose composts. Stick to indoor compost or, if you want to try something different, some plants do well in orchid mix!

If you sieve the garden compost, it should be fine for your houseplants. You might be okay just using it as is if it's all broken down well!

Honestly, most moist compost ends up being a gnat haven. I just microwave mine to sterilize it before using it indoors, or I buy dry compost and soak it before planting.
