Can I Use Hurricane Ties Instead of Birdsmouth Cuts for My Playhouse Roof?

I'm building a small playhouse measuring 8x8 with walls that are 5.5 feet high. My plan is to run a center beam for the roof and attach 2x4s to it flush. Then I want to use hurricane ties to secure them to the top wall studs. Is this construction method fine for a playhouse? Thanks!

Just a heads up, hurricane ties and birdsmouth cuts serve different purposes. Hurricane ties are primarily for wind uplift, while birdsmouth cuts help distribute the roof load onto the wall. But since it's just a playhouse, I doubt you'll face many issues by skipping the birdsmouth cuts. Just make sure there's some ventilation since there’s no attic. Hope this helps!

You can definitely use hurricane ties to skip the birdsmouth cuts. The Simpson H1 and H10 ties are great for that, as they’ll handle the uplift really well.

Yeah, that sounds fine for the playhouse! I built a 12x12 greenhouse using a similar technique, and it's held up against over 2 feet of snow with no issues at all.
