I'm trying to make some Danish oil at home, but I don't have mineral spirits on hand. I do, however, have limonene and acetone. Do I really need mineral spirits to dilute oil-based finishes, or can I make do with limonene or acetone as substitutes?

I’m not so sure about acetone as a substitute. As for limonene, while I've heard mixed reviews, I can say that some older Danish oil recipes actually used turpentine. So if you’re looking for a safer bet, you might want to consider that.
Limonene could work for you, but it might take some experimenting to find the right proportions since it probably won't be a straight one-for-one swap. I've used limonene in my hard wax oil blends before, and one of the perks is that it has a much nicer smell compared to other solvents.
