I'm looking to break down a bunch of old leaves, grass clippings, and small twigs for composting, and I'm planning to use my lawn mower for this. Is it a good idea to do this? Are there any reasons I shouldn't? Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy a separate mulching tool right now, so I'm hoping to get some advice. My mower isn't super powerful, but it does the job for regular mowing.

Absolutely, chopping up those leaves is a must! It'll make your composting much more efficient, allowing the materials to break down faster.
Using your mower for this sounds fine! The only thing to be cautious about is that some twigs might fly up and become airborne, so make sure to wear eye protection while you’re doing it. Better safe than sorry!
You actually don't have to break down the leaves and grass if you don't want to. I just throw mine in and let the worms do their work. But if you’re looking to fit more into your compost bins, cutting them down to size can definitely help speed up the breaking down process! Just keep in mind how it might affect your mower's lifespan.
