Can I Use My Old Concrete Slab for a Future Garage?

I'm planning to build a small 10x12 concrete slab for a shed now, but I'm wondering if I can integrate that slab into a larger concrete foundation for a garage or an extra driveway in the future. If anyone has experience with this, I'd appreciate any advice on what to consider!

You can definitely incorporate the old slab into your new concrete area as long as you prepare it right. Make sure that the new driveway is set about an inch above the old slab so it all blends nicely. Don't forget to add rebar for reinforcement when pouring over it! What’s your reasoning for not going all out and pouring the whole foundation now?

When you’re ready to expand, make sure you’re thinking about location and elevation. The new concrete needs to be thick enough and reinforced adequately. Just a heads up—contractors might not be super keen on working with your existing slab, but it’s definitely doable. If you're looking at alternatives for that shed, have you considered a raised deck style base?

Instead of pouring a concrete pad for your shed, you could just set it on concrete blocks, which might help avoid some permit issues. This way, your shed remains portable and by-passes any concrete foundation requirements. Have you checked if that’s allowed in your area?
