I'm wondering if I can repurpose my sprinkler timer to power some garden lights. The timer has several zones with individual 24-volt circuits that control solenoids for watering. I've seen some 12-volt garden lights that are compatible with both 12 and 24 volts since they're based on automotive bulbs. The catch is that my lights would have to be off while watering since the zones operate one at a time. I'm also concerned about the low power requirements, as the timer is likely designed for small wattage. Is this a bad idea, or could it work? Should I just invest in a proper light timer instead?

You'll need to check the wattage of your bulbs. The sprinkler timer only supplies a max of 24 watts since it's 1 amp at 24 volts. That might not be enough power for what you'd need to run the lights effectively!
