Can I Use PVC for Garden Hose Irrigation?

I'm looking for a DIY solution for my lawn irrigation since I have three zones to cover, but I'm currently just using garden hoses. I prefer not to hire a professional for installation and want something easy to maintain. Since I'm located in the Midwest, freezing temperatures are also a concern. I'm considering two options:

1. **Standard Method:** Run PVC pipes at least 4 feet deep and transport water directly through them. I'd need to be sure to drain them before winter, but this method seems more susceptible to leaks and other issues over time.

2. **Alternative Idea:** Use larger PVC (like 1.5 to 2 inches), bury it shallower (around 6 inches), and just pull my garden hose through it when winter comes. I haven't seen many examples of this technique, but it seems practical and less prone to problems. If there's an issue, I could simply replace the hose for about $30. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about getting my yard surveyed for any buried cables, and it should work well with my existing smart timers once set up. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these options!

Just a heads-up, pushing a hose through the PVC might be tricky! You should think about including a nylon pull string when gluing the pieces together. Attach it to the hose as well for when it's time to pull it out in winter. Personally, I’d go with burying some 1/2" PVC about 3 to 4 inches deep and blow it out at the end of the season—no need to go deeper than the frost line if it’s empty. Plus, it’s an easy fix if you need repairs later. Oh, and if you don’t have a compressor yet, now’s a good excuse to get one!

I'm actually leaning towards your second option. It definitely seems simpler! Before you commit to buying a bunch of supplies and digging, maybe do a small test run. Just don't forget to call before you dig! The phone and cable companies typically don’t bury their lines very deep, so it’s good to check that out first.
