I'm really excited about planting some Japanese maples in my yard! My husband and I think they're stunning. We live in the Pacific Northwest in zone 8, and our property faces south with no shade at all. I've read that these trees typically prefer partial shade, but I've noticed a lot of mature ones around town thriving in full sun. I'm curious if anyone has successfully grown a Japanese maple in full sun and how that's worked out. Any advice?

It really depends on where you're located. I live in Canada, and I have three Japanese maples in full sun that are thriving. But since your summers are warmer than mine, I recommend checking with your local garden center for specific advice.
I'm in zone 7b in NY, and all of mine are in full sun, and they're doing great too!
We have a few Japanese maples growing in full sun and they're doing really well! I'm also in zone 8 (Alabama) and haven't had any issues. They can thrive with enough water and care, so go for it!
In your climate, full sun should be just fine for Japanese maples. The Pacific Northwest's zone 8 is quite different from hotter areas like Dallas or Atlanta, where they definitely prefer some shade. If you're considering varieties, it's best to go for those with red or dark green leaves for full sun. Variegated or lighter ones usually need a bit more protection from the sun, but since your summers are cooler, they might manage well regardless!
