I've got a super cute yet really destructive groundhog that has taken a liking to my garden. Last year, I planted a 'groundhog grocery store,' and this time I'm hoping to grow some squash. Has anyone successfully used used cat litter to keep groundhogs away? I want to avoid using poisons if possible.

I wouldn’t recommend using used cat litter in any garden areas. It can carry contaminants that are harmful to humans. There are other safer repellents out there that aren't toxic to people. Just a heads up, all groundhogs can be really destructive, especially if it’s a breeding female!
You might want to consider raising your garden beds and adding a fence. That could help keep those critters out!
How about making a spicy homemade spray? Just chop up some spicy peppers, seeds and all (Serranos work great), and steep them in water like a tea. Once it cools, strain it, and you've got a potent repellent! It should smell strong enough to make the groundhogs think twice before munching on your plants. Just spray it on the areas you want to protect, not on the plants themselves.
Nice! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I did something similar for armadillos years ago.

Thanks that’s the info I was looking for.
