I'm looking for some advice on installing backsplash in our kitchen. It seems like a simple project, but I'm not sure about the best way to go about it. Is it possible to just apply tile directly to the drywall with some mud, or do I need to remove the drywall and replace it with something like plywood before tiling?

Yeah, I've done my backsplash the same way—right onto the drywall—and I haven’t had any problems. It really isn't that complicated if you prep it well!
For sure, you can apply thinset directly to drywall. Just keep in mind that moisture can be an issue, so make sure your drywall is clean and in good condition before starting.
You can definitely put the tiles straight onto the drywall! I’ve done it that way myself, and it worked out fine for me. Just make sure to use a good thinset to ensure the tiles stick well.
Just a heads up, if you're looking for an easier option, there are stick-on backsplashes available! They give a nice look, like stainless steel, and you can always tile over it later if you change your mind.
