We recently revamped our front entryway and ended up replacing some severely rotted wood in the door frame. The contractor suggested using a Trex board to avoid water damage in the future, which sounded good at the time. However, I overlooked the fact that it would be a solid gray instead of being capped in white aluminum as I expected. Now, I'm wondering if Trex can be painted or if there's a way to finish it to look more appealing. Should I ask the contractor to replace it, or is there a solution I can pursue instead?

Honestly, I think the Trex looks fine from the pictures! It actually does a good job handling water, and the color isn’t too distracting. But if it doesn't match your vibe, it's worth asking them to use a different material. A little communication goes a long way!
Painting Trex isn't generally recommended, as it might not adhere well over time, plus it could void any warranty. If you're really unhappy with the look, I'd suggest asking your contractor to swap it out for something more aesthetically pleasing, like PVC trim, which can be painted.
Yeah, I agree. The gray isn't bad, but if you wanted white, definitely push to get the right material.
From what I can see, the installation looks solid. Trex is typically used for deck trims because of its durability. I think this color could grow on you, but if you wanted a change, definitely bring it up.
Yeah, I’m with you! But it’s great to know the workmanship is there, at least!

True, it doesn’t look bad at all, but I understand wanting it to match your vision. Maybe they'll work with you on it!
