I'm in the process of installing acoustic panels between the joists and plan to get rid of the drop ceiling. My question is whether the drop ceiling needs to go wall to wall. Is it possible to take down parts of the drop ceiling while ensuring it remains structurally sound, especially if the remaining sections end at a joist and the main beam is still wire-supported?

You can definitely remove parts of a drop ceiling without needing to take all of it down! The key is where the suspension wires are placed, as those are what hold up the grid. Just make sure to keep any sections that are critical for support intact.
