Can You Remove Sections of a Drop Ceiling Without Taking It All Down?

I'm in the process of installing acoustic panels between the joists and plan to get rid of the drop ceiling. My question is whether the drop ceiling needs to go wall to wall. Is it possible to take down parts of the drop ceiling while ensuring it remains structurally sound, especially if the remaining sections end at a joist and the main beam is still wire-supported?

Yeah, you can easily hang parts of a drop ceiling without tying it to the walls. I've even seen unique setups where they hang 'cloud' sections in open areas. You just need to be careful about how you support the grid.

It's totally doable! As long as what you're leaving up isn't moving, you should be fine. I get that it’s unusual since most drop ceilings are wall-to-wall, but going for a more open look is cool—just be smart about it!
