Chiseling Troubles: How Can I Improve My Woodworking Project?

Hey everyone! I'm new to woodworking and my girlfriend and I are trying to replicate a project we found online. We've got our wood and some chisels, but it's been a struggle (here's what we've done so far: [Project Progress](https://i.imgur.com/8KTb2Xv.jpeg)). The wood keeps splintering and the bigger chisels we have aren't cutting through properly. Are we using the wrong type of wood, or should we wet it to minimize splintering? We're really eager to get this right, so any tips on how to move forward would be super appreciated!

Honestly, that piece you're trying to replicate looks like it was made with power tools or a CNC router. If you want to stick to hand tools, definitely sharpen your chisels and consider using a mallet for better control. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Thanks for the advice! Just confirmed that my chisels aren't as sharp as they could be. Gonna start practicing sharpening them.

It looks like you're using the wrong kind of wood for carving. Try switching to a softer wood, like basswood, which is way easier to work with. Also, make sure your chisels are sharp; factory sharpening isn't usually enough. Carve along the grain to minimize splintering. Good luck!
