Chisels Sticking to Sharpening Stones – Any Tips?

Hey everyone! I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced their chisels sticking really hard to sharpening stones, especially when using finer grits. I typically don't have this issue with knives, but it seems to happen more with my chisels. When I sharpen with my finishing stones, the chisel just wants to stay put, making it super tough to move back and forth. On my 5k stone it's annoying, but on the 11k stone with a 40mm chisel, it's really frustrating! I can barely apply any motion. Has anyone dealt with this before and do you have any tips on how to prevent it?

It might be that the back of your chisel isn’t flat enough, which can create a vacuum effect making it stick. Just ensure everything is flattened properly, and try to keep that contact surface as flat as possible.

Actually, it feels like the back is flat but still creating a vacuum effect.

Are you cleaning the stones after each use? Depending on if you're using water, oil, or diamond stones, not using enough could create issues. I learned the hard way that getting a bit of a slurry can really help. Make sure to keep your stones clean and flat to avoid any vacuum effects when sharpening.

Yes, I clean and flatten a lot. They are Shapton Kuromaku water stones, and I do get a slurry. Shouldn't that help with the suction?
