Choosing Between a Miter Saw and a Portable Table Saw

Hey everyone! I've recently gained some confidence tackling house projects and I'm excited to dive into my first furniture build - a rolling stand for my tools, followed by an outdoor coffee table. For Father's Day or my birthday, I'm wondering whether I should ask for a miter saw or a portable table saw to go along with my current circular saw. Also, I've heard some buzz about battery-powered miter saws from DeWalt; are they worth it or should I stick to corded options? I need to stick with DeWalt for some specific reasons, not that I have anything against other brands. Currently, I own a basic setup including a drill, impact driver, circular saw (with no tracks or accessories), a router, and a multi-tool, plus a variety of hand tools. My workspace is a small shed, so portability is key. I'm looking to spend under $600 and might consider a used one if I find a good deal on Facebook Marketplace.

If space is a concern, go for a job site table saw. But if you’ve got room, invest in the best table saw you can afford! Also, definitely keep an eye on local marketplaces for good deals. You never know what you might find!

Glad to see you're leaning towards table saws! A portable one on wheels would work great in your shed since you can easily roll it out for larger pieces. Sounds like you're gearing up for some cool projects!

A table saw offers way more versatility than a miter saw. You can use jigs for miter cuts on a table saw, which is super useful. Just make sure it has dado stack compatibility—some smaller job site saws don't! Also, consider if you have enough power in your workspace; you don’t want to overload a breaker when you’re cutting. I usually do my cuts outside because of lack of space in my garage—just a thought!

Thanks for the tip! Space is definitely a concern for me too, which is why I'm leaning towards the portable options.

Both options have their perks! A table saw is fantastic for precision cuts, but it does take up more space. A miter saw is great for repeated cross cuts but not as versatile for ripping. If portability is important, I’d recommend checking out DeWalt’s Flexvolt line, as those batteries can work across different 20V tools which is super handy!
