I'm trying to decide between electric and propane heating systems for my 1200 sq. ft. walkout basement, which has plenty of windows. I'm currently putting in insulation, and I've noticed that most people in my area prefer propane, but I've heard that a good electric furnace could be more economical to install and operate. Some folks have mentioned the Dettson electric furnace, and I'd love to hear opinions based on real experience. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

From what I’ve seen, gas heating is usually the cheaper option to run overall, making it a popular choice around here.
Honestly, I’d recommend considering a gas or an electric heat pump. Electric resistance furnaces can be pretty pricey to run in the long run, even though they’re cheaper to install. Heat pumps use a lot less electricity, plus they offer cooling for summer. Just a thought!
If you can swing it, a heat pump might be the best bet for future savings on operating costs compared to either electric resistance or propane. Plus, they help with cooling and humidity control too.
I'm in Northern Ontario where temperatures can drop to -40 degrees Celsius, so I worry a heat pump wouldn’t cut it on its own. Plus, I’d rather keep my options open since adding ductwork for a heat pump later might be easier if I start with an electric furnace now.
