Choosing the Right Fence: Tips for Mixing Styles

Hey everyone! I'm looking to finish enclosing my backyard and I'm torn on what type of fence to choose. I currently have two sides fenced in with my neighbors' fences: one is a brand new 6-foot white chain link, and the other is an old 4-foot silver chain link that's quite sturdy but not very appealing. Ideally, I'd love to put up a 5-foot cedar fence, but I'm unsure how that would look alongside the chain link fences. I know the new chain link is here to stay, but there's a vine growing on it that might offer some privacy. The old chain link is right on the property line, but it has some cedar trees growing through it, so replacing it might be risky. Have any of you dealt with having different types of fences before? What did you find worked best?

I totally get the struggle! We've got a mix of fences too, and honestly, it can be a bit of an eyesore. If money isn’t a big concern, you might want to go with a uniform look and install a 5-foot cedar fence around your entire yard. It looks cohesive but definitely requires maintenance. My personal plan is to plant a bunch of greenery along the fences to distract from the different styles - it's way nicer to look at plants than a mish-mash of fences!

Yeah, but wouldn’t it look weird to have a cedar fence next to a chain link? Plus, the neighbors probably won't want to tear down theirs. If the old chain link is on the property line, replacing it could get tricky too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
