Choosing the Right Impact Wrench for Medium Duty Use

I need some advice on selecting an impact wrench that can manage suspension bolts and lug nuts for a medium duty commercial vehicle, like an E-350 dually box truck, but also isn't too much for light jobs on passenger cars or smaller trucks. I've been using my M12 FUEL impact driver with socket adapters for quite a while, and while it's surprisingly effective, it's not a dedicated impact wrench. I'm considering either an M12 or M18 impact wrench—specifically, I feel it's down to the M12 Stubby or the M18 Mid-Torque. The confusing part is that the Gen-3 M18 shows lower torque than the latest M12 Stubby with the 5ah battery. Can anyone help clarify the differences in these models? Thanks!

I think the M18 Mid-Torque would suit you well, but it might struggle sometimes. Pairing it with a breaker bar should cover those tougher moments. Just keep one handy for those rare instances when you need extra muscle!

That works for me! I’m okay with using a breaker bar when I have to. I'd just prefer a good tool for the vast majority of jobs.

Just a heads-up, the M18 compact is quite soft compared to recent models, which is why the M12 compact outperforms it in torque. The M18 Mid Torque is solid, and often available at a better price than the M12 compact!

Nice to know! I did see the new M12 Stubby priced about $50 lower than the M18 Mid-Torque. I guess I need to keep my options open.

The 1/2in M18 Mid Torque can handle F-350 duallys like a champ! It’ll take a bit longer per lug nut compared to high torque options, but it’s gentler on suspension parts. You might also want to check out the M12 Stubby 3/8in—it’s super handy and perfect for oil pan drain bolts and smaller tasks!

I actually use drain valves for oil pans and I find my M12 high-speed ratchet works better for the small stuff than an impact.
