Hey everyone! I'm facing a dilemma with painting the walls in my cozy 1950s house. Three years ago, I painted with Sherwin Cashmere in flat, and while the color feels great, it hasn't held up as well as I expected. There are a lot of bumps and marks showing up, and I can't really do any extensive wall work right now. I've sampled the same color in an eggshell finish and I'm a bit unsure about the sheen, especially in a room with less natural light. My wife loves the flat look, but I'm wondering if I should switch to eggshell for better durability, even if that changes how the color feels. Is anyone else out there grappled with choosing the right sheen? I'd love your thoughts!

I totally get your struggle! Flat paint is a pain to clean and tends to show more dirt and marks over time. I think you might be overthinking the sheen. Sure, eggshell does have some sheen, but it also adds a touch of elegance without being too glossy. Your neighbor might not have noticed the difference, but if you love the flat finish, perhaps consider using it in an accent area instead?
I'm all for eggshell paint! Flat can feel really cheap, and when you brush against it, it can make it feel like a chalkboard. With eggshell, cleaning is a breeze! I used Behr eggshell enamel, and trust me, it holds up well against scuffs and marks. If you're looking for a balance, eggshell might be the way to go!
Flat paint usually works as an accent, while eggshell or satin is preferred for walls because of durability. I recently repainted my exposed beams from green to flat black, but for walls, eggshell provides a nice finish that is easy to clean, and it's usually the standard for areas that get traffic.
