Choosing the Right Push Lawnmower for Beginners: What Should I Get?

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to homeownership and lawn care, and I'm looking for some advice on push lawnmowers. I want to learn how to cut my own grass, but since I'm just starting out, I could really use some insights on which type is best for beginners. Any recommendations?

It really depends on a few factors like the size of your lawn and how much space you have to store the mower. For most beginners, a basic gas or electric push mower is a solid choice. Gas mowers are more powerful, but they can be a bit noisy. Electric mowers are quieter and easier to maintain, but make sure you have a good charger if you go that route since recharging can slow you down. If you have a small yard, consider a manual reel mower—cheaper, quieter, and can give you a better cut without all the noise.

Absolutely! Also, if you stick to one brand for electric tools, you can swap the batteries between devices, which is a huge plus.

Thanks for the tips! I have a small yard and just realized using a line trimmer alone isn't going to cut it.

Before choosing, consider how big your yard is and its terrain. For smaller or slightly hilly yards, a corded or cordless electric mower should work just fine. They’re generally easy to start, low maintenance, and you don’t have to deal with gas. But for larger yards with lots of trees, a gas mower might be needed, especially during fall when leaves are everywhere. They can take on tougher conditions easily. Just a heads up, some electric mowers really struggle with lots of leaves and high grass, so that’s something to think about.

Good point! I bought an electric mower thinking it would be fine, but it struggled in my larger yard.

Yeah, definitely consider the size and condition of your yard—it makes a big difference!

I'd suggest getting a self-propelled mower. They’re super easy to handle, especially if your yard has any hills. I’ve been more than happy with mine—it’s saved me a lot of effort! If you’re new to this, it’ll help you get the hang of mowing without wearing yourself out. Just pick the right one based on your yard size. For anything less than an acre, a battery-operated one is usually enough. Keep in mind that some brands can be more reliable than others.

A self-propelled sounds nice! I’d still want something light enough to work with.

Definitely! Just make sure to research your options; some are very easy to maintain.
