City Water vs. Well Water: What Should I Choose?

I'm considering buying a fixer-upper that has access to both city and well water, and I'm looking for some advice on which option might be best. I've owned my current home for 12 years, where we've used well water without any major issues—just dealing with hardness and the occasional hard water stains. We've installed a used kinetico softener and use special salt to combat rust, but it can still be a hassle.

The new place needs a bunch of updates, including a new septic system, furnace, and plumbing, so I'm curious about city water. I've never used it before and am unsure about the costs involved. I've heard mixed reviews: some say city water is easier to manage but comes with a bill, while well water is free but has its own maintenance and taste issues. Given that I'll have both options available, which one would you guys go for?

I'd definitely recommend getting the water tested first! And you might consider using both: city water for your home and well water for irrigation. That's a popular setup since it can help sidestep those watering restrictions during dry seasons.

Haha, totally! Some folks just run their sprinklers before dawn when no one is watching. You've got to be clever!

When it comes to well water, every situation is unique. Just because you've dealt with hardness at your current place doesn't mean you’ll have the same issue at the new house. It's really important to get the water tested first to see what you're working with!
