Concerned About a Splitting Beam in My House — Is It Normal or Time to Call Someone?

I recently bought my house and noticed a sideways split on a major wood beam. The seller mentioned it was just normal wear for wood as it ages. However, I've observed that the crack has become significantly deeper and longer since I moved in. This beam seems crucial for supporting a large part of the house, so I'm anxious about whether this is still considered normal or if I should get a professional to evaluate it.

If you're really anxious about it, consider installing a jack post as a precaution. It’s an affordable option and can help relieve any potential stress from the beam. Just make sure to position it properly and secure it well to avoid any issues down the line.

You might want to mark the split to track any changes over time. Some homeowners find it helpful to keep tabs on such things. If it hasn't worsened over a couple of years, it likely isn't a problem. But if it was me, I’d definitely stay vigilant just to be safe!

From what you've described and shown in the pic, it sounds like a normal occurrence. Wood beams can develop cracks as they dry out, but as long as the beam is still supporting its load properly, it's usually not a big issue. Many people deal with similar cracks, and it rarely affects structural integrity. Just keep an eye on it, and if you're still concerned, getting a second opinion wouldn’t hurt.
