Hey everyone! I'm a new homeowner in South San Francisco and I'm looking into some foundation work. I reached out to a couple of contractors, and they both told me that I wouldn't need a permit for the work since it's just adding bolts and supports to existing structures. However, when I contacted the county clerk's office, they said that I do need a permit for this kind of work. So now I'm a bit stuck—should I keep looking for a contractor who can manage the permits, or is it possible that the permit isn't necessary after all? Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks!

I'd recommend checking out your county's website. They often have clear guidelines on what sort of work requires permits. If you get something in writing from either the county or your contractors, that could help clarify the situation for you.
It's definitely a tricky situation! Sometimes, the county clerks don't fully grasp the specific details of your project, especially if they just hear 'foundation' and think it has to be permitted. Where I live, adding braces to an existing structure usually doesn’t need a permit. But I’m not familiar with your local rules, so definitely double-check.
I might call them again! Just to clear things up and explain it a bit better.

Great idea! I actually emailed the county clerk with all the details of the work. Fingers crossed I get a straight answer soon!
