I recently had some HVAC work done and was given an estimate of around $10,000. I didn't get a formal quote but signed a document that outlined the hourly rates. This was my first experience with a contractor, so I didn't realize the importance of more solid agreements. Now, the contractor has completed the work and is charging me $25,000, claiming there were numerous unforeseen issues that increased both material and labor costs. I understand that estimates can vary, but isn't there some expectation for them to stay reasonably close? Am I stuck with the $25K bill because of how I signed the paperwork, or could I contest this in small claims court?

You should check if the document you signed included anything about change orders; that's typically how clients are protected. Changes should be communicated to you as they happen, so you're not blindsided by the final bill.
