Hey everyone! I'm planning to install a gas line for a small fireplace in my crawl space and need some advice. A plumber suggested using copper piping, but I recently learned that the sulfur in natural gas can corrode copper over time. I've also come across plastic gas lines as an option. With about a 30-foot run in a tight crawl space, what do you think is the best material for this installation? I appreciate any insights! Thanks!

Honestly, I'd consider finding another plumber. It seems pretty unusual for someone to recommend copper for natural gas lines. Most pros lean towards black iron pipe or CSST fittings these days for safety and reliability.
If you're going underground, plastic is usually the go-to for gas lines. Above ground, it's black iron or galvanized steel for durability. It really depends on your specific setup though!
I've been in the plumbing supply business for over 15 years, and I can't recall anyone using copper for gas lines. The codes here usually prohibit it outright due to the risk of corrosion from sulfur. Black iron or plastic lines are typically the way to go.

That's interesting! I've heard copper is acceptable in other countries, though. I guess it varies by region.
