Cost Comparison: Staining vs. Laminate for Flooring Renovation?

I've recently bought an older home and I'm planning to renovate it. The existing hardwood floors are quite dark, and I want to lighten them up. I'm considering either staining the hardwood or installing laminate over it. The area I need to cover is about 3500 square feet, and I live in Randolph, NJ. Can anyone give me an estimate of how much each option might cost? Thanks a bunch!

Have you thought about sanding the existing hardwood before staining? You can't stain it to make it lighter, but sanding it down can help you achieve a lighter shade before you apply any finish. It might be a bit more labor-intensive, but it could save you money in the long run if you like the oak grain.
