I'm looking to add a shower with a fiberglass base to a new construction home that's on a slab foundation. The builder is asking for $10k to install it. Since there's already hot water access from a nearby sink and the water heater is just on the other side of the wall, I'm wondering if it would be feasible for an independent installer to do it for significantly less. What do you think?

If the slab isn't poured yet, you might have more options! Ask the builder if they can at least put in the piping and cap it. That could save a ton without you needing to worry about accessing under the slab later.
Installing a shower isn't typically too difficult, especially since you're in new construction. If the water supply is already in place and you're dealing with interior walls, that's a big plus. However, the tricky part is the drainage—make sure you can access the dirty water pipes easily. If those are structured well in your walls, it could save you a lot. If they need to go under the slab, though, it might add to the cost.
Exactly! If it's under the slab, there might be extra labor involved. Still, comparing quotes from independent installers could definitely help.

Good idea! I'll check with the builder about the piping options.
