Could My New Gutters Be Causing Water Leaks in My House?

I recently added gutters to my 9-year-old house after a hail storm damaged my roof two years ago. Lately, I've noticed that a corner of my bedroom carpet is getting wet. Initially, I thought it was due to a window being open, but the carpet remains damp even when the window is closed. I'm worried the gutters might be to blame. Additionally, I've noticed water seems to be coming in through the door to my deck and there's damage to the window sills in my basement. I'm wondering if the gutters are causing these issues or if it might be something related to the windows, house build quality, or siding. Any thoughts or suggestions on what might be wrong and how to fix it? Is it reasonable to ask my gutter or home building company for help?

Honestly, the gutters might not be the main issue. It's possible you have a roof leak that’s allowing water to run down the inside of your wall. Check your roof and ceiling for leaks—it could save you a lot of headaches!

In my experience, the gutters are likely the root of your problems. The water runoff from your roof could be too much for the current setup. I’d suggest contacting the installer for adjustments and maybe even consider grading the area around your house to direct rainwater away. Adding crushed rock at ground level might also help slow down the water flow.

It sounds like the placement of your gutters might be off. They should ideally angle out towards the outer corner and channel water straight down. If not, they can easily overflow and direct water towards your house instead.

Your gutters could definitely be contributing to the problem, but it’s worth noting that heavy rain can cause water to pour off the roof and miss the gutters altogether. I've had a similar issue where rain poured into my entryway because the roof was angled wrong. I'd recommend adding metal corner pieces to your gutters to catch more water and making sure the flashing around your windows is adequate to prevent leaks.

Definitely look into those corner pieces; they helped me a lot!

That’s a good point! I’ll check the roof angle and see if the flashing looks right, too.

The gutter looks fine at first glance, but I noticed the corner piece on your siding appears a bit odd and might be letting water in. It looks like it could have an opening at the top that’s allowing water to intrude.
