Hey everyone! I'm a woodworking newbie currently diving into making outdoor furniture. I'm also keen on crafting cutting boards, charcuterie boards, and coasters. I've got most of the tools I need, including a circular saw instead of a table saw. However, I'm trying to avoid getting a planer because it's pretty pricey and I hear it's quite loud, which isn't great for my workspace. Is there a workaround? Are there any alternative tools, like a hand planer or something else that could help? I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

One option you might consider is using pre-milled lumber that's already cut to the size you want. If your glue-ups are done well, you might only need to smooth out any glue squeeze-out. A good hand plane, scraper, or some sanding can help you finish the surface without requiring a noisy planer. Just keep in mind, going this route can add up if you're planning on making a bunch of boards!
You might want to check out local listings for used planers. I've seen plenty on sites like Facebook Marketplace for under $200. I picked up an older Delta planer for $125, and it's been working perfectly for me. Yes, they can be loud, but just plan to use it during the day when neighbors are okay with the noise.
If you have a router, that could be a great tool for you! You can set up a router jig that functions similarly to flattening a board with epoxy. It might take a bit of setup, but it could save you from needing a planer.
