Hey everyone, I could use your help! My niece is turning 7 this October, and she's the queen of Halloween, but she has severe pumpkin allergies. Since I'm moving across the country to be closer to her, this will be our first Halloween together, and I really want to make it special. Carving pumpkins has always been a family tradition, but painting them just doesn't feel the same to me. I thought about getting some Funkins, but they can be pricey, especially since I'd need one for her older half-brother and her baby brother too. I'm worried about the sensitivity issues with the Funkins even though they're molded from real pumpkins. I know there are foam pumpkins available at places like Michaels, Target, and Walmart, but they all seem to be the same basic shapes and lack personality. They also only come up to about 13 inches high and don't have the flat faces suitable for carving.
I've heard some things about the pumpkins from Michaels, but they all seem to be too round or oblong for my liking and not great for carving with a hot knife, especially for kids like my niece. What are the safest and most fun options I should consider? I have some craft foam, and I know that Hobby Lobby has good prices, but before I commit to a project that might turn into a hassle while I'm settling in, I'd love to hear if there are any other stores, sales, or ideas I might be overlooking! Thanks a million! ?

You can totally carve foam pumpkins using the little saws that come in those pumpkin carving kits. I know hot knives are popular, but the fumes can get pretty irritating, so it's better to stick with something safer. Plus, there are lots of foam pumpkin options out there if you order early, so you might find something fun!
Have you checked out the carveable craft pumpkins at Joann’s? They usually offer more variety in shapes compared to the Michaels or Walmart options, and their seasonal coupons can be pretty solid. Another fun idea is to use hollow plastic trick-or-treat buckets, like those jack-o'-lantern pails. They’re super easy to cut into, come in different shapes and sizes, and are way cheaper than craft pumpkins!

Do you still have a Joann's around?
