Hi everyone, I've been dealing with a pretty awful rotting smell coming from my kitchen vent, an unused fireplace, and the return vent for my A/C where I change the air filter. This has been an issue for about a year. My plumbing seems fine, but I do tend to get phorid flies, especially during the hotter months. Someone suggested the problem might be linked to my neighbor, who shares a wall with me—her garage hasn't been opened in months, and there are always flies buzzing around. I've tried cleaning my drains with some products, but I wonder if I should call a plumber or a pest control expert to figure out where this smell is coming from. Any advice?

It sounds like you've got a lot going on! I'd recommend checking your exhaust and dryer vents, just in case an animal has gotten stuck there. But it does sound like the neighbor's garage might be part of the issue. You might want to contact local health services or your health department. They can look into the situation if it’s really affecting your living space, especially if it’s unsanitary. The HOA may not be able to help much with this, since it's often outside their jurisdiction depending on what's happening inside individual homes. Good luck!
If you suspect a rodent problem due to the flies, checking in with local social services or the health department might help too. They often have programs for hoarding situations and can investigate if there are health hazards involved. I hope this gets sorted soon!
You should definitely reach out to your local county health board about this. If your neighbor's garage is full of garbage and it's causing a stink, they can come in to inspect and take action if needed. It’s worth getting the city involved especially if it’s affecting your health or comfort at home. Most HOAs are pretty limited in what they can do regarding internal issues.
