I woke up covered in about 30-40 bites on my inner thighs and hamstrings after a late-night gardening session where I was watering my grass while wearing shorts. It was quite a surprise to find myself scratching at my groin and thighs in the middle of the night. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced similar bites and what could have caused them, considering I don't have pets and live in a city. Are these bites from chiggers, fleas, or some other type of insect?

Sounds like it could be those tiny black flies that love to bite when you're close to the ground. I've had the same issue while working at my allotment, especially at dusk. If you didn’t feel the bite at first, it might be something else like fleas. Keep an eye out for them, particularly if you've got any critters roaming around.
With all the rain lately, it's prime season for these types of bites. I've been using Avon’s Skin So Soft spray, and it definitely helps keep the bugs away! Have you tried any repellents? Also, I think those are blandford flies; they bite pretty hard, and you don’t need to be near water for them to show up. Just be careful when you're out in the evenings!
I’ve had bad experiences with blandford flies myself. They can leave nasty bruises and itch like crazy, but thankfully mine don’t tend to bleed. Keep an eye on those welts; they can really be bothersome!
