Dealing with Dust Mites: What’s Effective Without Breaking the Bank?

Hey folks! I'm a new homeowner tackling a dust mite problem in my older house and need some advice. I'm looking for affordable, practical solutions that won't complicate my life more than necessary. Here's what I'm working with: I have carpets, a mattress, feather pillows that I want to keep, and some older furniture like a couch and chair. I own a HEPA vacuum and a dehumidifier, which I usually keep in the basement but might move upstairs. I've planned a cleaning routine and have a few sprays in mind, but I'm unsure if I'm doing too much or not enough. Here's what I'm considering: vacuuming everything, heat-treating my feather pillows, using zippered covers, spraying a mite solution, and keeping humidity low with my dehumidifier. Do you think this is overkill? Also, can anyone recommend budget-friendly mattress and pillow covers that actually work? Are the cheap mite sprays any good? Should I treat my couch and chair too? And do I still need to vacuum my mattress regularly if I get zippered covers? Any insights would be super helpful!

You definitely want to invest in an air purifier! It filters dust and allergens out of the air, helping reduce issues with mites. Make sure to size it for each room you're using it in, and you'll notice a lot less dust on surfaces. Combine this with your current dehumidifier and vacuuming, and you're on the right track!

Getting rid of dust mites completely is tough since they thrive on the skin cells we shed. While vacuuming is great, don’t overthink it—just clean regularly to keep their population down. Wash your sheets frequently, changing pillowcases as often as you can. If possible, consider swapping out carpet for hard flooring, as carpets can trap dust and mites a lot more than hard surfaces.

Yeah, I switched to hardwood and noticed a huge difference—less dust and way easier to clean!
