I'm really struggling with a fungus gnat infestation in my aloe vera and Christmas cactus. These little pests seem to have killed my Christmas cactus, and I'm at my wit's end. I've heard that covering the soil might help prevent them from laying eggs, but when I tried using tissue as a cover, it turned yellow. I've exhausted all the usual household remedies and even considered freezing them (it's winter in Canada, so I've put them near an open window), but I'm worried about harming my already sick aloe. Can anyone suggest effective ways to get rid of these gnats?

Another option is to grab some yellow fly traps for the adult gnats. Also, consider using mosquito dunks mixed in water and applying it to your plants. That should help tackle the larvae stage effectively!
You might want to mix up a solution with 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, and 1/4 cup of dish soap. Place it in small bowls around your plants. The gnats are attracted to the mixture, and it should help reduce their numbers in a few days. Just make sure to keep a light shining on the bowls to draw them in more!
