I recently grabbed the 1/2" M12 stubby impact wrench for a great deal at $150, which included two batteries. I was debating whether to get the 3/8" version instead, and now I'm wondering if I made the right choice. As a hobby mechanic who occasionally does truck repairs, woodworking, and house renovations, I want a versatile tool setup. I find myself often using 1/2" sockets for bigger projects, but I'm also attracted to the 3/8" model due to its wider socket range and lower costs. Some perks of the 1/2" include having access to an 8mm socket and a more substantial feel, while the 3/8" offers cheaper socket sets and could work with other tools I want. Should I sell my 1/2" and go for the 3/8" when it's on sale, or stick with what I've got?

Why not just buy a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter? That way, you can have the best of both worlds without selling your current wrench! It’ll save you some hassle, especially if your projects sometimes require different sizes. Plus, that way you won’t miss out on the power of your 1/2" impact when you need it.
Honestly, if you think you’ll need smaller sizes more often, just get an adapter. You’re not losing much torque with smaller jobs, and you’ve already invested in the right tool by going with the 1/2"! I’ve used both sizes, and they both have their perks depending on the job.
True, you really don’t need full power for 10mm bolts. I’ve had the same experience with my impact tools.
If you're going to have just one impact, sticking with the 1/2" is probably your best bet. It covers a wider range of applications, especially if you're tackling larger bolts like rear axle nuts. The 3/8" is nice, but you may find the 1/2" gives you more versatility in the long run without needing to switch up tools.

Great advice! I’ll definitely consider that. I’m all about maximizing my tools!
