I'm working on building a custom stand for my 6x3 fish tank, which weighs about 2500 lbs when filled. I plan to use 4x6 timbers for the load-bearing part of the frame and was considering a lap joint pinned with 3/4 dowels for strength. My idea is to create a large box using those timbers and add cross braces with 2x4s on top, then panel it. Does that sound sturdy enough to you? I'll share my plans tomorrow once I finalize them!

That’s a serious setup you’re working on! Just a heads up, I wouldn’t trust that stand without additional support, especially given the weight. 2500 lbs is hefty—consider reinforcing it with plywood to prevent any racking. Better safe than sorry!
Sounds like a fun project! For your 6-foot tank, I’d recommend thinking about the tank's height and additional weight from things like rockwork or equipment. Having a 40-gallon sump under there is also a good consideration. To prevent lateral movement, strong dimensional lumber braces around the sides and some plywood on top could definitely help. And don’t forget a leveling pad to ensure everything sits perfectly flat! I can’t wait to see your plans!
Great advice! I didn’t think about the leveling pad. I’ll keep that in mind.
True! I’m trying to keep costs down, but safety is a priority.
