Do Ceiling Fans Help Cool a Hot Upstairs?

I'm a first-time homeowner dealing with an older house. The air conditioning works well on the main floor, but it struggles to keep the second floor cool. I'm wondering if installing ceiling fans in each room would help with cooling the upstairs. Also, can anyone give me an idea of how expensive it is to install ceiling fans?

Have you ever had your ducts cleaned? That can significantly improve airflow. Ceiling fans can help circulate air and make things feel cooler, but if you want to install them, it’s not too tough! I replaced an old fan myself, and it was almost as easy as changing out a light fixture. There are plenty of tutorial videos online. If you're hiring an electrician, be prepared for a couple hundred bucks depending on where you live.

I didn't see any records of the ducts being cleaned. I'll look into it. There's definitely air going up there, but it feels weaker, so maybe a fan could help.

Have you checked the insulation in your attic? Older homes often need better insulation. Improving that can really help save money and make the upstairs more comfortable during hot days.

I can get up to the attic but haven’t spent much time there. I’m sure the insulation could use some work.

Ceiling fans can help, but they mainly circulate air rather than actually cooling it. The cool feeling you get is just from the wind effect on your skin, not the fans lowering the room temperature. As for installation costs, it really varies! I suggest getting quotes from local electricians. If you're looking for alternatives, portable AC units, like window or floor models, might be a good option too—they can run about $300-400 at places like Costco.

I was considering window units but hated the hassle of installing and removing them every summer. I haven't heard of floor units before—definitely checking those out!
