I'm curious if it's true that Dewalt's warranty policy allows them to replace defective batteries without the need for sending the old ones back. Has anyone had experience with this?

Yeah, that's pretty much how it works! You usually don't need to send the defective battery back. I've had to register my tools with receipts, but when I did need a replacement, they just sent me a new battery right away without any hassle. Just make sure to follow their disposal guidelines for the old one!
