Do floor jack posts need to be secured to supporting beams?

I'm not an engineer, but I recently had contractors install several floor jacks to help with the sagging floors in my house. While checking the work, I noticed that the jacks weren't secured to the beams they support. Is that normal, or should they be fastened?

Typically, no, they're not fastened to the beams, but it's actually better if they are! While it's common practice to leave them unfastened, nailing them down can help with stability and safety, especially if someone bumps into them. It's worth asking your contractor to secure them. Plus, when it comes to inspections, having them secured can give you peace of mind for resale value.

It's not just a suggestion; they really should be nailed to the post for stability. As for the resale issue, it might not matter much down the line, but having them secure could definitely help avoid any problems. Just make sure that the post is on a solid footer, which you mentioned it is! That's great for overall support.
