I'm in Southern California, and our second floor gets unbearably hot because of the sun and the airflow. My parents want to install these Poly Shield foam boards, believing they'll help with the heat. I'm not so convinced. Does anyone have thoughts or experiences with these? Also, just so you know, we don't have roof tiles or an attic that could be contributing to the heat.

Using foam boards is definitely a step in the right direction! However, you might want to find out exactly where the most heat is coming in. Does that sunny corner have windows? Thick blackout curtains could help a lot. Also, check your ceiling. If it feels hotter than the room, that's a sign that insulation is needed. Since you mentioned no attic access, consider that your roof space may be limited for adding insulation. But generally, ceiling insulation is beneficial as long as it’s done right, even if it might keep some heat in for longer periods.
Yes, those foam boards can help reduce heat transfer, but how much depends on your situation. It’s important to make sure they’re air-sealed properly to work effectively. Since they've already started the installation, it's not a waste of time even if it’s just a small improvement. Every bit counts when battling heat.
I appreciate that! I’ve been doubtful about the route we’re taking but if it helps even a bit, I won’t complain.

We actually have blackout curtains already! But I think the ventilation might be the real issue with only one window per room. Thanks for pointing that out about the ceiling, I wasn't sure if that type of insulation would make things worse.
